Ahrefs Rank Meaning

Ahrefs Rank (AR) is Ahrefs’ global ordering of websites by backlink-profile strength, where a lower number means a stronger profile.

Applies to
Domains in Ahrefs index
Commonly confused with
Domain Rating, Google ranking factor

Key points

  • Ahrefs Rank is a global ordering of websites by backlink-profile strength, not a score.
  • A lower AR number indicates a stronger backlink profile, with #1 being the strongest.
  • AR is derived from Domain Rating and the quality and quantity of dofollow referring domains.
  • AR is not a Google ranking factor and should not be used as a direct traffic predictor.
  • Use AR for benchmarking link-building progress, not as a standalone SEO goal.

How it works

Ahrefs Rank (AR) orders every domain in Ahrefs’ index by the strength of its backlink profile. The strength is primarily determined by Domain Rating (DR), which itself is based on the quantity and quality of dofollow referring domains. A site with a higher DR and more high-quality backlinks will receive a lower AR number, meaning it is ranked higher in the list.

AR is a relative metric. A site’s position can shift when Ahrefs discovers new domains, recalculates DR, or expands its index. Because AR is derived from Ahrefs’ own data, it is not a direct measure of Google rankings or organic traffic. It is best understood as a comparative benchmark within Ahrefs’ ecosystem.

Why it matters

AR serves as a quick comparative signal for link authority, especially when tracking progress against similar domains over time. It can help prioritise outreach targets and benchmark against competitors. However, AR is not a Google ranking factor and does not predict traffic directly.

Common mistakes include assuming a lower AR automatically means higher search traffic, or confusing AR with Domain Rating. AR is the global position, while DR is the strength score. Optimising for the AR number itself is misguided; the focus should be on building a stronger, relevant backlink profile. Because AR is relative, changes in Ahrefs’ database can move AR even when a site’s actual SEO performance is stable.
