Key points

  • Squarespace SEO settings include site-wide and page-level title and description fields.
  • The platform generates a sitemap at /sitemap.xml for submission to search consoles.
  • 301 redirects are managed through URL mapping to preserve link equity after URL changes.
  • Pages can be hidden from search results via the page SEO settings.
  • Metadata length recommendations are around 50–60 characters for titles and 150–160 for descriptions.

How it works

Squarespace SEO settings are accessed through the site’s dashboard. The site-wide SEO title and description appear in the Home Menu under Marketing > SEO (or similar, depending on version). These define the default search appearance for every page that does not have its own metadata.

For individual pages, the SEO title and description fields are in the page settings under the SEO tab. Squarespace automatically generates a sitemap at /sitemap.xml, which can be submitted to Google Search Console. The platform also supports 301 redirects via URL mapping, essential when changing page slugs.

Additional settings include the option to hide pages from search results, and the ability to connect Google Search Console from the Third Party Tools area. Squarespace’s guidance recommends short, descriptive URL slugs and clean page naming for better SEO hygiene. For detailed configuration, see the guide on squarespace seo.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the site-wide SEO title and description blank or generic: the site appears with a default or missing metadata in search results.
  • Not adding page-specific SEO titles and descriptions for important landing pages: each page misses the opportunity to target relevant queries and may show irrelevant snippets.
  • Changing URLs without creating 301 redirects: old URLs return 404 errors, losing link equity and confusing users.
  • Blocking important pages from search results by mistake: the hide-from-search option, if enabled inadvertently, prevents indexing of key content.
  • Ignoring metadata length recommendations: titles longer than 60 characters or descriptions over 160 characters may be truncated in search results. For examples of well-crafted titles, see seo title examples.
